ANNEX I (MANAGEMENT AND TREATMENT OF CONTAMINATED CASUALTIES) TO
244TH MEDICAL GROUP DESERT SHIELD OPERATIONS ORDER 001 (U)

                                                         UNCLASSIFIED

       4. (U) EVACUATION.
           a. (U) All contaminated casualties should be decontaminated as
soon or as close to the areas where they where contaminated as
       possible.
           b. (U) All contaminated clothing, equipment and other gear are
removed from the casualties, and the casualties are properly
decontaminated. They will not be hazardous to the persons
transporting and receiving them. They can be evacuated as clean.
           C. (U) Before contaminated casualties are evacuated by aircraft
or ground vehicle they should be decontaminated; otherwise the vapor
from the chemical agent will endanger the crew and other personnel.
If a casualty cannot be decontaminated before he is transported, the
crew, other personnel and the casualty must wear their protective
masks. The hazards of the chemical agent to other persons can be
further minimized by applying the following measures.

                (1) (U) Prepare the litter by placing an impermeable cover
over it and an open blanket on top of the cover.

                (2) (U) Place the casualty on the prepared litter and fold
the sides of the blanket over him. Although this measure helps to
protect other persons, it increases the exposure o t a casua ty to
       the contaminant.

                (3) (U) Provide as much ventilation during transportation
as the weather and other conditions permit.

                (4) (U) When the casualty is removed from the litter, the
impermeable cover and blanket must remain with him. if the litter
has not been protected with an impermeable cover, the litter must be
       treated as contaminated.

       5. (U) DECONTAMINATION.

othing and equipment is
removed from the casualty and placed in a dump marked "contaminated"
       (see App 1).

           b. (U) Skin, mucous membranes, eyes and wounds.

                (1) (U) Skin- Is decontaminated by the use of chl orinating
compounds, absorbing powders, ointments, solutions or other organic
solvents. After the preliminary decontamination, it is desirable and
often necessary to use abundant washings with soap and water to the
       contaminated parts of the body.

                (2) (U) Mucous membranes and eyes.-Flush mucous membranes
immediately with water. The eyes can be decontaminated with water or
       isbtonic bicarbonate or saline solution.

                (3) (U) Wounds-Small wounds are washed with clean water
while serious wounds are decontaminated by medical personnel by means
       of hydrophilic gauze and saline.
