APPENDIX 1 (CONTAMINATED- CASUALTY CONTROL AREA) TO ANNEX I
(MANAGEMENT AND TREATMENT OF CONTAMINATED CASUALTIES) TO 244TH
MEDICAL GROUP DESERT SHIELD OPERATIONS ORDER 001 (U)
UNCLASSIFIED
1. (U) ORGANIZATION. The following is a guideline from FM 8-9
on the organization of the Contaminated Casualty Control Area (CCCA)
in a NTF.
a. (U) Sorting Point (chemical triage). Staffed by a Triage
officer who directs the casualty to one of three locations depending
on the nature of the casualty. This prevents the spread of
contamination and receive rapidly the particular type of treatment
the casualty needs. Upon arrival at the triage point, the ambulance
personnel can provide information as to whether the casualty is
contaminated or not. The Triage officer then decides whether the
chemical casualty has a surgical or medical condition which requires
priority over decontamination. The general principle "better
blistered and living than decontaminated and dead" must be followed.
The three locations to which a casualty may be directed initially,
are A (Contaminated Casualties), B (Contaminated Emergencies) and C
(Clean Casualties). These three locations, as well as D, are
described below.
b. (U) Contaminated Areas. The contaminated areas of the MTF
are designated as A and B. Each of these locations must have a good
flow of nontoxic air and must be downwind from the clean area.
(1) (U) Location A (Contaminated Casualties). If a
casualty is contaminated with a chemical agent but is not in need of
immediate medical or surgical treatment, he is first received in
location A. Here all contaminated blankets, clothing, and equipment
rom the casualty and placed in a dump marked
"contaminated'. for contaminated material must not be taken beyond
this point. The casualty's skin is decontaminated with an
appropriate decontaminating powder, solution or ointment, or soap and
water. Washing facilities are desirable so that a soap and water
bath can be given if needed. After decontamination of the casualty,
it is desirable to change him to a clean litter and blanket if
required.
(2) (U) Location B. (Contaminated Emergencies). When a
casualty requires immediate medical or surgical treatment more
urgently than decontamination, he is taken directly to this
location. After emergency treatment measures are performed, he is
then decontaminated (all contaminated blankets, clothing, and
equipment are removed from the patient and placed in a dump marked
"contaminated"; contaminated material must not be taken from this
point) and moved to location C or D as appropriate. If the patient
requires additional medical treatment, it should be administered in
location C before he is removed to location D.
