INFORMATION PAPER
SUBJECT: Reported Defects in Meals Ready to Eat (MRES)
1. Purpose: To categorize the reported defects of MREs stored in the
Kingdom of Saudi Arabia (KSA).
N '
2. Facts:
a. The reported defects in MRE's are directly proportional to the
amount a+ time kept at high ambient temperatures and in direct sunlight.
b. These reported defects will not make the soldier sick; however,
they may decrease the palatability and aesthetic appearance of the MRE..
C. These reported defects will be reduced if stockage levels are
minimized at the Class I supply points and a source of shade provided
(camouflage netting).
d. Reported MRE defects and their corresponding explanation are as
follows:
1) Discolored/separated cheese; This is due to the high +at
content and prolonged exposure to direct sunlight. I+ one kneads the
product before opening the package, the aesthetic appearance will
improve. Color variation from white to yellow is normal.
2) Coagulation of peanut butter/separation of oil from main
body; This is due to the high fat content, long term storage and exposure
to direct sunlight. If one kneads the product before opening the package,
the aesthetic appearance will improve.
3) Melting of chocolate candy bars; This is a result of exposure
to sunlight and high ambient storage tempertures.
4) Of+ color a+ applesauce (browning); This is a normal
variation a+ color dependent on the type of apples used. Brown applesauce
is most common in 1?89 date of pack MRES. Color variation from white to
brown is acceptable.
5) Increased hardness of brownies; Moisture content is low to
ensure successful long term storage. Thus a very firm texture is normal.
ncreased grittiness of kethcup; To decrease this finding,
soldiers should be instructed to vigorously mix for 30 seconds after the
addition a+ water.
