Defense of the Wadi Al Batin

               (3ENERAL

As the air campaign commenced, the lst Cavalry
Division was concerned about a possible attack of the
enemy down the Wadi Al Batin towards Hafer Al Batin.
Although such an attack was possible there were no
outstanding indicators which supported that an attack was
               imminent.

On 27 January, the lst Cavalry Division main command
post.(DMAIN) jumped once again. Its new location was north
of the Tapline Road at a location the soldiers called the
"Syrian site". This site was previously used by the
Syrians when they were in the same vicinity.

               ENEMY SITUATION

               Introduction:

S2 estimates continued to conclude that the enemy
would defend in place and not conduct any attack in our
sector. Iraq, on the other hand, was thoroughly convinced
that a coalition attack would use the Wadi Al Batin
approach and the enemy reinforced the tri-border area
accordingly. Substantial artillery and armor assets were
deployed to the "Ruqi Pocket" (tri-border/Wadi area), over
and above what divisional assets would provide. Corps
artillery assets equivalent to two artillery brigades and
armor which equaled an armored division reinforced this
critical approach. Additional command and control nodes
were deployed to this area.- including another corps
               command post.

               Enemy Disposition:

INTSUM 164, dated 17050OZ Jan 91, reported that the
d
brigades: 37 heavy, 74 infantry, and 6 special purpose
forces. Most of these brigades were subordinate to 36
division headquarters (24 committed, 12 reinforcing). The
