This problem was quickly corrected with help from
the Ndvdl Forwara Laboratory by introducing graduated 50 ml
vials to aid in the dilution. -An additional preventive step
was provided to the soldiers on checking and reading the
smart tickets. All soldiers checked th6ir smart tickets to
ensure that there was a small pinhole in the middle of the
test ticket. This pinhole allowed the fluid to propprly
distribute throughout the test ticket paper. If this noie
was not present, they were to discard the ticket and use
another one. The soldiers were also received additional
instruction on the reading of the test spots. If the
reaction spot was not a bright red and filled in completely
it was to be considered negative.
Although Biological detection was therprimary
missi6n', the teams used the XM-21 as units or as the team
chiefs dictated. Each XM-21 was utilized during the
specific vulnerability windows between 0100-0700 hours. The
teams collocated both systems within the same area of
o eration, thus enhancing the capability and the utility to
t@e supported unit. it was determined through extensive use
that lai7ge armored vehicles would trigger a false positive.
CHALLENGES/ACCOMPLISHMENTS
1. Challenges.
(a) Personnel - The initial problems were during the
re-deployment phase only. The main problem was the lack of
9OS/grad@-specific soldiers. The Division tasked all units
to provide a list of soldiers to Gl in order to fill these
shortages. It took 10 days to fill shortages @hus extending
te 't
a by 3 days. An addi ional problem
resulted from the new soldiers. There was a lack of
cohesion, due to half of the detachment not ever having
worked together. This problem was compounded by the early
emp loyment of the firi;t serial and the immediate employment
of thi second.
. Sb) @quipment - The problems with equipment resulted
main.Ly rrom the changing of the carrent company
configuration into a CM/BIO asset. The initial challenge was
obtaining the needed assets IE... 3/4 ton trailers, M2
machine quns, MG tripods, MK-64 mounts, and radio
installation kits. Thb division provided a pusher unit,
which in turn searched the division Tor the needed assets.
Some of the equipment was not provided, IE... M2 Machine
guns, Trailers, MK-64 Mounts, POL supplies, spare HUMMWV
part@, initially inhibiting the mission of the detachment.
once all equipment available was received an intense
preparation phase commenced, radios we@e installed,
com@lete T/Ils were done on vehicles, trailers, and M2 MGIS
