(h) Mission - The complexity and unfamiliar mission of
Chem/gib detection teams posed many questions. The initial
information provided to the detachment was vague, leaving
much of th@ implementation of the teams to the leadershi-
discretion. The initial information on team emplacement hag
not been coordinated within the proper areas or units. The
devising of a monitoring plan had hot been established, or
the re@uptly plan for thi deplo)(ed.tearns. The dissemination
of informa ion about the teams mission and capabilities was
not widely distributed thus inhibiting the initial
coordination for team use.
(i) Communication - Due to the extreme distances and
varying means of communication, it was difficult to track
and-mohitor mission's, logistics @nd personnel issues. This
lack of effective communication rei;ulted in a substantial
logistics runs to the teams and also imped6d the
dissemination of timely and accurate information.-
(i) Maintenance support was hindered due to the
difference in vehicles our between the detachment and FMIB
(HUMMWV's VS. CUCV). The lack of spare parts and the slow
supply system inhibited the mission ahd increased down time.
(k) The lack of good maps was a significant problem
from the on-set. Th6 teams were in need o accurate maps in
order to navigate effectively in the desert terrain.
information was needed by the Detachment
leadirlihipCM/tBIOO )fTpeinl@elTl&n and employ assets. Due to the
lack of BIO speci c ence among other intelligence
nd accurate threat brief could n6t be
established or disseminated to the teams.
2. Accomplishments.
(a) Safely deployed 45 soldiers and all equipment to
the AOR.
(b) Coordinated and employed 12 Chem/Bio detection
teams throughout the AOR. Develbped a good information flow
between CENTCOM J3, CRDEC liaison officers, and the
detachment therefore producing the needed information on the
employment and monitoring w@lan of the teams. Developed a
logistical resupply plan in ich the teams would be pashed
a logistics p@ckage every 4-5 days This package consisted
Of enough supplies to sustain the team for six days of
continuous 24 hour operation.
(c) Established a good information flow between the
operators Leadership within the detachment, and the CRDEC
liaison officers on further development, implementation, and
procedural concerns of the XM2 Biological sampler and the
XM21 Chemical Detector.
