        S@ECT. Chemical Conference (10.FY91)

operational difference is that J-series units typically do not
have enough MBAls to cover all separately deployed sub units.

            c. 82d Abn Div. LTC Jackson briefed results of their
chemical battlefield assessment study used to determine recon-
naissance and decontamination requirements. The -Following
        questions drove the analysis.

                 (1) What will the battlefield look like?

                 (2) What do we need to support our forces?

                 (3) If we don't get everything we want, how can we make
the best use of what we get?

            d. lst COSCOM. MAJ Evans discussed the process used by
COSCOM to identify the threat, prioritize requirements, and
reduce vulnerabilities associated with rear area defense. The
need for integrated decon and contamination avoidance plans was
highlighted. The requirement for a Corps-wide warning system
using civil defense sirens, capable of transmitting audible
warnings throughout life support areas, was discussed.

            e. 2d Chemical Bn. MAJ Pannel, Bn XO, briefed the history,
lineage, task organization, and capabilities of the battalion.
        Key unit personnel were identified.

            f. XVIII Abn Corps. COL Barbeau summarized operational and
training initiatives being worked by the staff. He also under-
scored the need +or MSC to be responsive when reporting require-
        ments to Support CDE +ielding.

                 (1) CHEMEX. The upcoming Chemical Staff Exercise
(CHEMEX) was introduced. The CHEM5X will exercise the NBCWRS,
the NBC Threat Warning System (NBCTWS) NBCE skills and provide an
opportunity to work concurrent NBC recon and decon platoon
mission planning. The CHEMEX is tentatively planned for late
November. An exercise strawman and dates will be discussed with
 next ten days.

                 (2) NBC Threat Warning System (NBCTWS). The proposed
NBCTWS was discussed. The system uses warning data from AWACS
and national systems. Warnings will be sent over the Corps intel
data, opns and command nets. The system will be disseminated as
an interim change to the Corps FSOP.
