the enemy's rear. The enemy battalion's defense collapsed. 238
prisoners of war surrendered to the troop.
19. On the night of 26 February 1991, G Troop, 2nd Squadron,
2ACR, ran into elements of the Iraqi Tawakalna Division of the
Republican Guards and elements of two other enemy divisions.
Outnumbered, CPT LToseph sartiano's troop held their position for
an eight-hour battle. When G Troop was finally relieved by the
@adron's tank company, nearly all their ammunition was
wtended.
20. CPL LeMaster, a Bradley gunner assigned to B Troop, lst
Squadron, 2ACR, had been evacuated to the hospital with a log
injury prior to the start of DESERT STORM. During a visit to the
hospital by LTG Franks, the VII Corps Commander, LeXaster was
asked what the General could do for him. "Give me a ride back to
B Troop in your holicopterl," said LeMaster. He was a 1000-point
gunner during the last gunnery and his crew needed him. Asked
about his leg, LeXaster said he was certain it would be fine if
he could just get back to his troop. CPL LeMaster made it to
liESERT STORM, compliments of the VII Corps Commanding General.
21. SPC McDermott, Headquarters and Headquarters Troop, 2ACR,
was responsible for getting four HMMWV's deployed by air to Saudi
Arabia from Germany. While others struggled to meet the stiff
Air Force regulations for airlift, McDermott, without
supervision, found out what had to be done, prepared the vehicles
in his charge, and had the first vehicles in the unit ready to be
loaded on the aircraft bound for the Persian Gulf.
22. The old lst Infantry Division M578 recovery vehicle was
always breaking down for one reason or another. on this day,
d march ahead, it was a broken road wheel
arm. SPC Mike Glueck, the driver, surveyed the damage. spitting
in the sand, he announced, "Gimme an hour and a half and she'll
be up." As the clock ticked toward SP (start point) time, Glueck
dug the track out, broke track, removed the damaged road wheel
and arm, and short-tracked the M578. "Is she gonna make it,
Glueck?." asked the captain. "Hell yes, sir. And she's going
all the way across Iraq, tool" The recovery vehicle always pulls
drag. During a road march, SPC Glueek probably eats enough top
soil to plant a garden. Today was no different. His reward for
fixing the track was more dust. Soon, however, the M578 was down
again. This time, the transmission was looked. The captain
noted the grid and made a mental note to send someone back to
pick up Glueck. Suddenly, the recovery vehicle was back at the
rear of the column. PFC George Sanadan was on the gun. Glueck
threw the captain a thumbs up from the driver's hatch. That
night, Glueck and the stubborn M578 kept the convoy moving,
pulling out an 18-wheeler stuck in deep sand. By morning, Gluack
had a track with a blown transmission from the recon platoon in
tow. When DESERT STORM kicked off, Clueck was still pulling the
same broken M113, now a permanent fixture on the M578. Four days
later, now deep in Iraq, the captain looked back through the dust
