4. Communications.
a. Supported units: The communication between units and
supported units was adequate when they provided a phone or
landline when collocated. When the Supported unit does not
provide a phone the EOD unit must rely on the outmoded FM
communication equipment and possibly Secure capabilities 4@+
available. The AN/VRC 46 FM radio with KY-@-6 Communications
Secure Equipment (COMSEC) provided the majority of the short
range Communications between EOD LLni@ls/teams and the supported
units. These communications are not adequate for ranges beyond
25-35 miles which were rOL(tine-y experienced on EOD incidents.
Recommend the EOD unit be provided Mobile Subscriber Equipment
(MSE) mobile radio that connects with nodes within a radius of
approximately 25 miles.
b. Higher HeadqLLarters/Long Range: The current HF 19'@, AM
radio for long range is adequate for the task but is not
available. Only about l@D units had the HF 19:7. radio and only
one had a shorter range 213 AM radio. These radios could fill
the gap with COMSEC capability. The COMSEC k.'.Y-63 is compatible
with the HF 193 radio but is not on the Current or pending L
series TOE. The inclusion of the V.'.Y-6a and installation kit on
a modification of the L series TOE would provide long range
secure communication with higher headquarters and supported
units at remote sites.
5. Equipment. The equipment authorized is not as Current as
what is issued to other branches of the military. The current
equipment authorized +or rendering safe has not significantly
changed since the 195EI's. The render safe tools are proposed
for issue to every EOD team under the L series TOE. This unit
did not complete an RSF' other than disposal by detonation. The
of equipment
and would probably be left behind on future operations. The
tools left behind during combat were the EDD robot, Wire
Communication, Pf@le kit, and Ferrous Ordnance Locator. The most
utilized EDD tool was the Ml@@@@' Firing Device which is antiquated
compared to commercial products that have better range and
signal security.
6. Doctrine. The new FM 9-15 recommends three man EOD teams
which is fielded under the L series TOE. The current CUCV
family of vehicles does not allow three people in the cab with
their equipment (LBE, Weapon, Mask, and CPOG). The doctrine
should drive the TOE not TOE driving doctrine as is the current
case. Current doctrine does not have units assigned to units
below Division level. This unit was assigned to an Armored
Calvary Regiment. The current doctrine should be utilized on
large scale exercises with combat and combat support units.
This would allow these units to understand EOD uni.ts are not
assigned for them to use as they would an engineer unit but are
there to provide area support in their area. EOD units can not
be attached to other units but must seek logistical support and
collocate with them.
