           2. (U).Operation DESERT SHIELD conducted by USCENTCOM on C)2/C)4/91.

           4. (U) TITLE-. OPERATIONS: CONSOLIDATED RANGE OPERATION


           5. (U) OBSERVATION: The NCO Academy NCOs were utilized and
           worked closely with G3 Training to consolidate and run an
           effective range operation +or divisional units during
           pre-deployment range firing.

           6. (U) DISCUSSION- The NCO Academy provided one NCOIC and one
           Safety NCO for each range. Unit +iring provided Als and Range
           details. Ammunition was drawn in bulk by the Academy's training
           NCO, based on guidance from G3 Training and the number of
           personnel scheduled to fire. Ammunition was kept in the
           Academy's Arms Room. Each NCOIC drew ammunition daily and
           transported it to the range. NCOICs and range details met at
           the range early ((.)600) to load magazines and prepare ranges for
           firing. Units showed up at C)SOO to fire. Units directed
           personnel to zero ranges first, then proceed to the field fire
           ranges, and to the qualification ranges last. Ranges ran
           from C)E3OCj until 1700 seven days a week.

           7. (U) LESSON LEARNED: By utilizing NCO Academy NCOs in a
           consolidated range operation, soldiers sharpened their
           marksmanship skills while units prepared for deployment with
           minimum turbulence.

           S. (U) RECOMMENDED ACTION: That consolidated range operation
NCOs be implemented by other units in the
           + L(tLtre.
