xxxxvIG DECENIBER 1990 0600 WAKE-UP, Today comes as a surprise,
unit moves to (HAAF). the flight is scheduled for 16 December at
1630 hrs. Aircraft (C5-A) arrives at HAAF at 2330 hrs. December 16,
1390. Unit drives entire stock of equipment into the aft hold of
the CS-A, doors close and at 0005 hrs. on IT December 1990
"Airborne'. The entire aircraft belongs to the 221st with the
exception of a civilian reporter and a USA lLT returning from
emergency leave. First stop, Westover AFE in Westover MA., with
snow on the ground. After a four hour layover to service the
aircraft and to change crews. 0600hrs 17 December 1990 the 221st Is
Airborne' again enroute to TorreJon Spain arrived in Torrejon with
a five hour layover (track of time Is lost at this time), the unit
Is given the opportunity to shower and eat. 'Airborne' next stop
Damman International airport in the Kingdom of Saud I Arabia.
0730hrs IS December 1990 unit drives out of the fore end of the
same C5-A onto Saudi soil 33 and 1/2 hours alter leaving the United
States. The first Image the country portrayed was a harsh
unforgiving climate which soon lived up to It's Initial Impression.
After meeting with Trans Control Det, the vehicles were re-fueled
and convoyed to the King-Aziz port of Dammam. The point of contact
at the port had no knowledge of an incoming EOD unit and we were
told to convoyed to the infamous 'Tent City" on the Persian Gulf In
Dammam. Vehicles were then stored In a compound (units at the port
were cannablizing other units equipment to make up for their own
tages), 24 hour guard was placed on unit equipment. Living
conditions were less than adequate not to mention unhealthy.
Immediately we were told stories of dissentary, dehydration and
general Illness, all of which were luckily avoided. The 512th
EODCT Commander met with the Commander of the 221st to discuss his
plan to break the unit up and place the 221st personnel Into other
active army units within his command. It was decided that the
@-21st would fall under the control of the 542nd EODCT, after Lt
Fields discussed his concerns to both the 512th, 542nd and EOD
Group Commander. The uni@ was then assigned It's first mission,
less than 11 hours after arriving in theater.
=zzxzl9 DECEMBER 1990 Team III of the 221st is assigned th@ first
mission, team departs to the forward area of the VII Corps, to King
Faisal Range. Mission is to clear M48 sub-munitions dispensed from
a 'ALRS by accident.
'@"@'-O DECEMBER 1991) Unit moves to tie Dammam Expo i.-i Dammam KSA.
Unit Is assigned mission statement by 54-'nd EODC@'. See attached
mission statement). Unit is collocated with the 53d EOD, 593d ASG,
133th RAOC. The unit's living area consisted of ont- GP small tent
and a under ground bunker.
