DEPARTMENT OF THE ARMY
HEADQUARTERS, 2D SATTALIONV 16TH INFANTRY (MECH)
FORT RILEY, KANSAS 66442
(u) Phase I 16Jan-14Feb
(U) On 13 January, the first elements of TF 2-16 began moving from
the part a+ Dammam, Saudi Arabia to.TAA Roosevelt. Traffic moved
slowly along Tapline Road as the unit was competing on this one
two lane highway with other Divisions and Corps support
elements. This road system at best was extremely strained and
sometimes very chaotic. The defensive plan for the TF was to
occupy the sector oriented north with +our companies an line, E
company screening the right flank, the scouts screening 2-4-t@m to
our front (along the Egyptian MSR), and the trains consolidated
in an area around the main command post. On 21 January, the
entire TF closed safely into TAA Roosevelt and +or the next few
weeks would concentrate on building combat power, key on platoon
and company training and rehearsals and become acclimated to the
desert.
(U On 28 January, the TF received its first operations order -For
Ihat was to be our eventual mission. On order, TF 2-16 was to
conduct a deliberate attack in zone to penetrate enemy defensive
positions along PL U)isconsin; establish four assault lanes
through the enemy barrier simultaneously; attack in zone to
destroy enemy forces initially to PL Colorado; then to PL New
Jerseyl be prepared to continue offensive operations.
(U ON 29 January the TF staff issued the order. TM 9 was the main
dffort and would clear the trenchline which runs along PL
Wisconsin. TM A would breach two lanes on the left and then
secure a support by fire position to ensure TM B would not be
eir left flank as they turn to move along the
trenchline. TM D would breach two lanes on the right and then
secure a support by fire position to isolate the southern trench-
line. TM C would assault the northern trenchline to ensure that
the enemy could not mutually support the southern trenchline that
TM B was clearing. The operations order for the assault was not
a detailed document by design. The TF felt: that with the poor
Intelligence that had been received to date that it was more
important to rehearse application of our combat power against a
ilworst case scenario" Iraqi defense. The TF engineers designed
an Iraqi defense by digging t:renchlines and emplacing
triple-strand concertina wire. The actual breach sites were left
without wire as the TF was conducting dry run rehearsals and it
was a cood technique for ensuring the teams found their actual
.breach lanes'at night.
