DEPARTMENT OF THE ARMY
HEADQUARTERSW 2D BATTALION, 16TH INFANTRY (MECH)
FORT RILEY, I-IANSAS 66442
(U) Phase II 14FEB-20FEB
(U),,.In 140850CFEB91 TF 2-16 began moving from TAA Roosevelt to PL
rth Carolina. The entire division less the units already in 13P
12 moved simultaneously. TF 2-16 would be set on PL North
Carolina and Just south of BP 12 by 1500 hrs. The following day
the TF moved into BP i2 and conducted a leaders reconnaissance of
each company sector. The perception at Corp level was that the
lst ID was leaning to far forward and, might possibly tip off the
plan. The TF began to limit the amount of vehic@ movment by
conducting leader recons of the battalion sector and recons of
the berm that divided the neutral zone.
On 18 February the TF moved into BP 22 and would prepare to
(U)COndLict a night rearward passage of lines for TF 1-41 IN from the
divisions 3rd Brigade. TF 1-41 IN received numerous amounts of
Iraqi artillery fire as they began the rearward passage of lines,
however, the enemy indirect +ire was countered with MLRS and
cannon fire from British Artillery Units that had moved into BP
2. After all of TF 1-41 was on the south side of the berm the
(UgF Scouts, FIST-V crew and the TF OSR team were@positioned along
the berm to screen along the TF front and to prevent any possible
enemy penetration. For the first time since arriving in Saudi
Arabia the TF had no friendly units between them and the
Iraqi's. Many false reports were given throughout the night as
soldiers on the front line -For the first time calibrated their
nerves. The intervisibility line and numerous subtle folds in
the terrain made it difficult +or units to verify the same
spatting. To help eliminate the false spottings and so called
"Spiders" of the desert the TF began day and night thermal
scanning.
ON 20 February the TF conducted patrols along the berm to
(U)ensure that no enemy positions or minefields had been emplaced
between the lanes that the TF would pass through on the attack.
One hand grenade and a few RPS roun'ds were'-FaLtnd and destroyed
but no enemy personnel or positions were discovered. TM A5 a
tank heavy team, moved north of the berm and conducted a
r@cihnaisance and zone clearance out to 2km of a'small village as
well as to the front of the TF sector. A civilian picl,,-up truck
was found and destroyed as well as a possible enemy -Forward
observer position. Over the next few days the TF would test fire
all weapons systems, validate pre-combat inspections and conduct
TM rehearsals to ensure that every soldier knew the TF mission.
