            Airfield (Corps Rear).

                 d. MAJ Shirk, 1AD Chem, says the Corps INTSUM was not correct
in stating Iraqi mustard agent has a shelf life. He is a chemist
who has done a lot of work with mustard in its "dirty" form and
distilled. The shelf life of HD is measured in decades, not
months. There is no impurity that could be present or added which
would shorten that. His bottom line is that G-3 was giving a false
sense of security by stating HD has a shelf life.

                 e. Message sent to all MSC's recommending techniques for
contamination avoidance. To quote extracts of the message -

                    (1) To standardize operations within VII Corps and r-o
ensure all units can recognize contaminated areas at night,
recommend dropping a plastic water bottle containing a chen-lite
(preferably yellow) at each location where a standard gas narker is
placed. Using this technique may help prevent vehicles from
driving into contaminated areas at night.

                    (2) The most positive method of controlling access is
posting personnel or military police at the site to direct traffic
around the contaminated area. These personnel should remain on
both sides of the hazard area as long as there is a chance of
vehicle moving on the axis of advance passing through the
contamination. Particular attention is required to ensure positive
link-up and relief by trailing units.

                 f. MAJ McNamara TAC Chem reported 1CD still short 9885
CPOGs/BDOs. Also said ICD might use smoke in their sector to draw
attention away from 1ID. CG, 1CD had raised the issue and COL
            Cherrie, G-3, Corps was deliberating.

, said CIS VII Corps talked
with the ARCENT Deputy G3 reference CPOGs/BDos being a possible war
stopper. ARCENT Main stated VII Corps had been issued 137K. That
was the figure given by COL Thornton as needed to meet the two-per
soldier requirement; if given 231K would give 3 per soldier.

                 h. ARCENT Main reported Sanators would arrive in theater
between 20 Feb and 3 Mar. distribution plan is
20 Feb - 30 coming; 12 go to VII Corps
21 Feb - 91 coming; 46 go to VII Corps
3 Mar - 117 coming; 20 go to VII Corps
TOTAL - 238 coming; 78 go to VII Corps
