           the first ground combat unit out of EUSAREUR to deploy and
           therefore Rudd had priority at Stuttgart. Teams had to be set up
           at Bremerhaven to receive the equipment being sent from Bamburg via
           rail or convoy. The entire squadron had most of its equipment on I
           ship so that upon arrival one complete unit would be intact.
                Next came the awsome burden of deciding what to bring other
           than mission related equipment. The guiding thought at the time
           for Rudd was "if we didn't take it with us, we probably wouldn't
           have it." So the unit began purchasing large quantities and
           varieties of locally purchased items that might be crucial to their
           operations. An example would be soldier sustainment type items
           which varied from "sunglasses ... sun tan lotion... hand tools."
           The squadron was able to buy food from the commissary. nWo bought
           167,000 dollars worth of food from the commissary" recalled Rudd,
           who was told that the unit wouldn't see nothing but MREs for the
           first 3-4 weeks. They purchased large amounts of rice, stove top
           stuffing, and every last bit of powdered drink mix, to name a few.
           The squadron literally "cleaned-out" the commissary in Bamberg.
           The community had daily meetings dealing with the crisis where they
           would flash on a board the amounts of money spent by differnet
