(U) CHEMICAL AGENT EXPOSURE IN IRAQ. (U) ARCENT Chemical Officer
reported incident of a 3AD soldier exposed to blister agent during bunker clearing
operations on 28 Feb 91. Soldier threw a thermite grenade into an empty bunker
(OU050072 in Iraq near the Kuwait border). On 1 Mar soldier complained of
blisters and now receiving treatment in theater. FOX NBC Reconnaissance
System used to identify blister agent on NOMEX garment and flak vest. FOX also
detected blister agents in soil of the empty bunker. Blister agents HD and HK
confirmed by urinalysis. No munitions have been found to date. Sample of
contaminated clothing will be collected by the Foreign Military Intelligence
Battalion and evacuated by Technical Escort personnel to CONUS for analysis.
