03 Dec 90: Under control of the S-3 the second air lift departs Bamberg
with A Company's main party, and a portion of HHC, for a total of 100
soldiers. First formation is at 0600, and buses depart PFC Gym at 1000 hrs
for the trip to Rhein Main AFB. Unit wait at USO tent at Rhein Main until
the 1730 flight departure. The flight is a TWA charter flight. It makes
one stop at Rome International Airport, and departs after a four hour
delay. The flight arrives at Dhahran Airport, military side (Royal Saudi
Military Air Port) at 0630, and the unit arrives at the port of Dammam
around 1400 hrs on 4 Dec.
04 Dec 90: The third element departs Bamberg at 1000 hrs, then proceeds to
the Stuttgart Airport and depart at 1700. This lift consists of portions
of D Company and HIIC, to include the Command Group, for a total of III
solders. Upon arrival at the airport at Dhahran, the Battalion and
National Colors are uncased and the unit marches from the aircraft to the
reception center.
05 Dec 90: The Battalion receives its first project in SWA. The task is to
prepare a vehicle holding area and a site for fuel bladders at the port of
Dammam. C Company receives this tasking. A detailed list of projects, who
tasked, man-hours expended, and equipment used, is is enclosure 3, tab E.
06 Dec 90: The fourth element, under the control of the HIIC Commander,
departs Bamberg by way of the Nurnberg Airport. It consists of the
remainder of D Company, and portions of HHC and B Company for a total of
193 soldiers. The first vehicles, consisting of primarily tracked vehicles,
are off-loaded at the Port of Dammam. Around 1330 hrs, 14AJ Thompson, VII
Corps Legal Affairs, provides a briefing to all vehicle operators and
leaders on the particulars of driving in Saudi Arabia. He reminds those
attending that the U.S. Military does not have a Status of Forces Agreement
with Saudi Arabia, and that drivers have to pay particular attention to
Saudi Arabian traffic laws (Even if the locals didn't). Today the S-2
provides the Company Commanders with the first updated threat analysis on
Iraqi defenses and order of battle.
08 Dec 90: CSM Henson coordinates with AAFES-Dhahran to set up and operate
a PX annex/shopette in the cage at the south end of warehouse 16.
Delta Company soldiers build a wall to separate the PX from the rest of the
warehouse and assist in stocking, pricing and running cash registers. Army
beats Navy, score 30-201
09 Dec 90: The fifth and final air lift of 150 soldiers, under the control
of the Battalion XO, departs Bamberg around 0400 and from the Nurnberg
Airport around 1000. The flight arrives in Saudi Arabia around 2000 hrs
and they arrive at the port around 2300 hrs. The element consists of B
Company, and the rest of IIIIC. At this time the entire Battalion (765
soldiers) plus other units are housed in warehouse 16 for a total of over
1400 soldiers under one roof. The Battalion takes charge of the area to
improve sanitation conditions. This includes police of the area, the
latrines adjacent to the warehouse, and the shower facilities at the end of
the pier. Class I is provided by a local catering service that feeds over
10,000 soldiers from two locations. They provide hot meals at@ breakfast
and supper, with the units providing MRE with a supplement at noon. In
addition to the required work to maintain the area, the soldiers of Blue
Babe are also scrounging wood and nails to construct items to make life a
bit more tolerable. Blue Babe carpenters construct tables, benches,
