A minor error has been made (not the first one, as we know
all too well) and the people from the division are debating
whether we are or are not in Kuwait. Apparently, the "are not's"
win this debate, as we are told to pack up and prepare to move 5
miles (yes, that's right, 5 miles) west towards Kuwait. Here, at
grid coordinates N2952/E4710, we reopen the hospital to prepare to
take more patients. This has turned out to be our tenth move, but
the good news is that we are now within walking distance of the
telephones. This turns out to be a day to remember, because as
we are setting up the hospital darkness suddenly fills the sky.
Expecting torrents of rain, we rush everything into the milvans,
only to discover that the darkness is from the smoke
belching from burning oil wells. The temperature plummets into
the
60's, and soon all the vehicles have their headlights on. It is
dusk at 1300, a depressing pall hangs over our new home. We have
the hospital set up by 1200, and are receiving patients almost
immediately, admitting the first three by 1400.
our orders are to set up "minimal" hospital facilities, a
couple wards, the EMT, one operating room and one CMS section, as
we are not to receive many patients, just the occasional emergency
and the usual sick call.
