     SUBJECT: Unit History


     of.@,,,the Second BrigadeT   orce  comes under enemy fire.   Several armored
         cles are destroyed,  two soldiers  are killed in action  and  nine more are
       unded, several seriously. Three flight crews from the unit      are needed far
     Oorward of the Preplanned exchange points and well within range of enemy
     weapons systems. All crews unhesitatingly move forward and evacuate the
     casualties. All crews are recommended for awards of heroism-

     23. 20 February - 7 March 1991 - During subsequent missions and on through
     the ground war, unit flight crews continue to distinguish themselves in the
     performance of their missions. All are recommended for Air Medals and
     several are recommended for Combat Medic Badges.

     24. 22 February 1991 - Just prior to the start of the formal ground war, the
     mission to support the 2d ACR is given to the 321st Medical Detachment. The
     316th Medical Detachment is committed to support the First cavalry Division
     Main Support Battalion, the Forward Support Battalion of the Second
     Brigade, C-15, and the Forward Support Battalion of the First Brigade, C-115.
     All unit assets are rearranged to new locations, most within a few miles of
     the Iraq, Saudi Arabia, Kuwait border area. The mission of the First Cavalry
     division is to prevent Iraqi units from any possible offensive movements
     south through the Wadi Al Satin.

     25. 25 February 1991 - The First Cavalry Division, which has been acting as
     the only defensive element of the Vllth Corps and the CENTCOM Reserve, moves
     north to join the battle with the Ist Armored Division, 3d Armored Division,
     the 2d Armored Cavalry Regiment, the Ist United Kingdom Armored Division and
         First Infantry Division. The 316th Medical Detachment moves with them;
        ablishing headquarters in Iraq near 45 56 62E, 29 27 89N. -Seueral unit
     4@,rr-cr,aft and crews under the command of lLT Keith Rossomme move to a position
     north of Kuwait, near Basrah, with the Forward Support Battalion of the
     Second Brigade near 47 00 10E, 30 06 SON. The unit moves north into Iraq
     without the benefit of any security forces during a 24 hour combat move.

     26. 28 February - 14 March 1991 - The 316th Medical Detachment remains in
     Iraq providing coverage to U.S. forces, Iraqi casualties, Kuwaiti casualties
     and torture victims, and injured civilians. The unit helps to move patients
     south from two Mobile Army Surgical Hospitals, the 807th and the 159th so
     that they can be moved into Kuwait. The unit is directed to assist the 475th
     Mash, KY ARNG, to relocate into Kuwait.

     27. 7 - 11 March 1991 - All other 217th Medical Battalion Units return to
     Saudi Arabia, leaving only the 316th Medical Detachment and elements of the
     273d Medical Detachment. The unit is recommended for Meritorious Unit
     Commendation Award by the Commander, lst Cavalry Division.

     28. 13 March 1991 - The unit conducts an outdoor barbecue/picnic celebrating
     the completion of our mission and our imminent departure from Iraq.

     29. 14 March 1991 - The unit departs from Iraq to Saudi Arabia, 15 miles
     east of Al Quasutna, and begins preparing for redeployment to CONUS.

     30. 30 March 1991 - The unit completes construction of in ground aquatic
        ditioning facility to improve unit members' physical conditioning, unit
     le'rale, and the quality of sun tans prior to redeployment.
