                  b. Important staff actions conducted during this phase
               included-


                     1) The planning priorities for the battle staff
                        were:
                        a) Continue to refine the plans for offensive
               operations during Operation DESERT STORM.
                        b) Conduct aggressive reconnaissance north of the
               Saudi-Iraqi border and plan to conduct a task farce sized
               raid.
                        c) Develop contingency plans for offensive
               operations that required the brigade to attack north,
               establish a breach in the enemy obstacle belts, pass
               through the division, and continue offensive operations to
               destroy enemy forces.

                     P) Major orders published:
                        a) FRASO 91-2-13: Cross Border Raid executed by
               TF 2-5 Cav. Issued to subordinate units an 16 February.
                        b) FRAGO 91-2-14: Defend in Sector from NTS68100
               to PT07811BO. Issued to subordinate units on the afternoon
               of 19 February.
                        c) 91-3-1: Change One to OPLAN DESERT STORM.

                  c. The chronology of the phase included-

                     16 Feb
                        0100: 1-82 engages targets in Iraq from firing
               positions vic PT200110.
                        1030: A TF 2-8 Cav MIAI, H050, strikes a land
               mine at PT048183. No one is injured, but there is
               substantial damage to the track and suspension components
               of the tank. Two additional mines are found in the
               immediate area.
                        1448: A/B Eng completes three breaches in the
               berm to support future cross border operations. TF 2-8
               supports and provides  security. A group of buildings near
               the berm is destroyed  by an A/B Eng CEV.
                        2045: TF 2-5  conducts dismounted recons forward
               of the berm.
                        2120: TF 2-8  conducts dismounted recons forward
               of the berm.
                        2203: The TF  2-8 recon element observes eight
               unidentified vehicles  vic PT02P230.,TF 2-8 recalls the
               recon element to south of the berm and prepares for
               engagement with artillery fires. Coordination is made with
               I ID to determine if the forces are friendly.
