MEMORANDUM TO: RECORD (CF: 332d Medical Brigade)

SUBJECT: After Action Report, Operations Desert Shield and Desert Storm.

   1. This AAR covers the period during which the 14th Medical Detachment
was "in country", beginning 7 January 1991, to date. A separate, final
AAR will be prepared to cover the entire activation-deactivation period.

   2. During its deployment is Saudi Arabia, the 14th Medical Detachment
included an AM Team and three LB Teams, plus additional 91S personnel to
form a fourth LB Team, and other personnel in specialty areas such as
administration, supply and maintenance. Entomologists were also
included in the event insect vectors became a problem. A total of 77
personnel (la officers, 59 NCO and enl.) were deployed from the 14th
       Medical Detachment.
Five other teams were attached to the 14th during deployment. Three were
active component LB Teams: the 48th Medical Detachment from Ft. Riley; the
71st Medical Detachment from Germany; and the 223rd Medical Detachment
from Ft. Carson. Each of these teams had 11 members. The other two teams
were Reserve Component JA Teams: the 358th Medical Detachment from
Opelika, Alabama and the 449th Medical Detachment from Ames, Iowa. Each
of these teams had 6 members.

   3. The mission of the 14th Medical Detachment and it subordinate units was to
provide preventive medicine and veterinary services (food inspection)
support to VII Corps in its area of operations (AO) during operations
Desert Shield, Desert Storm and until re-deployment. Division-level
preventive medicine support was provided by preventive medicine assets at
division level. The Commander, 14th Medical Detachment, also appraised
the Commander, 332d Medical Brigade, regarding significant preventive
medicine and veterinary issues via the Brigades AC of S, Professional
Services, who in turn counselled with the Brigade Staff Preventive
       Medicine Officer and Veterinarian.

   4. Task assignments were made to provide preventive medicine and veterinary
support on an area basis during operations in SWA. For example, the 71st
LB Team was given P.M. support responsibility for the northern VII Corps
sector served by the MASH hospitals under the 341st Medical Group. The
223rd LB Team, the 48th LB Team and the 14th Delta LB Team were given the
PM support responsibility for the central VII Corps sector.. including the
areas of the CSH hospitals under the 127th Medical Group. The other LB
Teams and the JA Teams provided rear VII Corps sector PM and vet support,
including the areas of the EVAC hospitals under TF Evac. The AM Team
provided administrative, maintenance and logistic support from its
location at the 332d Medical Brigade base camp and tasked an internal Jump
TOC to deploy to the VII Corps central sector (Log Base Nelligan) for
centralized command/control. The Jump TOC did not move to LBN, however,
since the ground phase of the battle ended prior to its movement date.
