   SUBJECT: AAR Comments/Operations Desert Shield and Desert        Storm. 14th
              Preventive Medicine Unit                                                             -if;

   1. These comments cover the period of 29 Nov 90, when the        14th Medical
   Detachment was activated, to date. The comments are divided into various
   categories !@ome of which are mission-related and some of which are not.          A
   separate s;rles of comments will be developed at a later date for the period
   of deactivation of the unit at FLW.

   2. Mission and Organization.

       a. The mission of the unit and its subordinate teams was to provide
   .oreventive medicine (PM) and veterinary service (VS) support to VII Corps in
   Southwest Asia (SWA) during Operations Desert Shield and Desert Storm in Saudi
   Arabia, Iraq and Kuwait.

          The 14th was a direct reporting unit of the 332nd Medical Brigade from
       iville, Tennessee.    In addition to the 14th, consisting of a Headquarters
   T@@m (AM) and three Environmental Sanitation Teams (LB), the command of the
 -14th included three Active Component LB Teams
                                                      (the 48th from Ft Riley, the
   71st from Germany and the 223rd from Ft Carson) and two Reserve Component
   Veterinary Teams (JA), the 358th from Opelika, Alabama and the 449th from
   Ames, Iowa.

   S. Task Assignments

   a. Task assignments    were made to  provide PM and VS support on an area basis
   during operations in   SWA.  For example, during the ground battle, the 71st LB
   Team was given PM support responsibility for the northern VII Corps sector in
   Iraq and Kuwait served also by MASH hospitals in the 341st Medical Group.           The
   223rd LB Team, the 48th LB Team and one of the 14th LB Teams were given PM
   support responsibility in the central VII Corps sector in Iraq and Saudi
   Arabia served also by CSH hospitals in the 127th Medical Group. The other           LB
   Teams and the JA Teams provided PM and VS support, respectively, in the rear
   VII Corps sector in Saudi Arabia served also by EVAC hospitals under Task
   Force Evac.

   b. The AM Team provided administrative, maintenance and logistics support, as
   well as command and control, of all teams from its location at the 332d
   Medical Brigade base camp. A 14th HQ Jump TOC was organized to deploy to the
   VII Coros north-central sector- (at Log Base Nelligan) for geographically
   ceU alized command and control during the ground battle. However, the ground
   t   @e ended prior to its movement date.

   C. Following the ground battle and prior to re-deployment via rear assembly
   areas (RAAs), the VII Corps assumed the mission of area security along the
