             APPENDIX I (Water Treatment    to-ANNEX L (Field:SanitAtion)
             to 507th Med CD (AA) FSOP

             1. PURPOSE: To direct procedures +or water treatment
                 methods.


             2. PROCEDURES:

                a.  Chlorine Residue% The -Field sanitation team will check
                    -------- -------
                    the chloride residue in the water supply.th@ee times a
                    day. Maintain a 5 PPM chlorine level. Correct
                    deficiencies immediately.

                b.  Disinfection Methods.
                    (!)--C-A-N-T--E-E-N-(i-o-d-i-n-e--tablets):
                        (a) Fill a,canteen with the cleanest water
                            availa6le
                        (b) Add I tablet if the water is clear; 2 if cloudy
                        (c) Allow the tablets to dissolve -For 5 minutes
                        (d) Shake the canteen, loosen the cap, then invert
                            the canteen and allow water to leak out to
                            disinfect thL- threads
                        (e) Wait 20 minutes (40 minutes if the water is
                            below 45 degrees Fahrenheit)
                    (2) CANTEEN (calcium hypc3chlorite)-
                        (a) Add one ampule to 1/2 canteen cup of water and
                            stir; or, for. untreated canteens add 1/2
                            canteen cap-FLtl to full canteen
                        (b) Shake the cat@teen, loosen the cap, then invert
                            the canteen and allow water to leak out to
                            disinfect the threads
                        (c) Wait 30 minutes (I hr if the water is below 45
                            degrees F:ahrenheit)
                    (3) 5 GALLON CAN:
                        ."a),Add one ampule to 1/2 canteen cup of water,
                            stir
                        (b) Add 1/2 of solution to 5 gallon can
                        (c) Shake, loosen the cap, then invert the canand
                            allow Wclter to leak oltt-to disinfect the lid
                        (d) Wait 30 minutes (1 hr if the water is below 45
                            degrees Fahrenheit)
                    (4) LYSTER BAG:
                        (a) Add 3 ampules +or clear water or 4 ampules -For
                            cloudy water into a.-FLtll canteen cup
                        (b) Pour the solution into a -Full lyster bag
                        (c) Stir, then fILtsh the spigots +or 3 to 5 seconds
                        (d) Wait 10 minutes, then fILtsh the spigots again
                        (e) Check the chlorine residue by:
                            1. crushing one othotolodine tablet and
                               inserting it into a 5 PPM tube
                            2. -Fill the 'Ltbe with water to-the bottom of
                               the colored bond
                            :3. sha@*e the tube until the table', is dissolved
