1. The attached is a brief synopsis of the epidemiology, distribution and
seasonality, and prevention, of major diseases in the theater of operations.
This list is not intended to be all inclusive; there are additional diseases
in theater which are either at a low reported frequency or not of military
significance. Intent of the synopsis is to provide information to subordinate
commands.
2. Of the diseases listed, three must be considered to be war-stoppers:
enteric diseases, malaria, and sandfly fever.
6. Enteric diseases can be controlled through proper field sanitation
techniques. To date, there have been no serious outbreaks of enteric disease-
among coalition military personnel.
4. Malaria and sandfly fever can be prevented through use of effective
repellent systems. Recommendation that all military personnel be issued the
following repellents:
a. Insect/Arthropod Repellent Lotion, 2 oz. (NSN: 6840-01-284-3982)
(advise code 28). Recommended issue: 2 oz. tube/person/week in
theater.
b. Permethrin Arthropod Repellent, 6 oz. spray (NSN: 6840-01-278-1356).
One 6 ounce spray can is sufficient to treat one uniform plus mosquito
netting. Recommended issue: four 6 oz. spray/person.
5. Recommend that the above repellents be issued to military personnel before
they deploy from their FAA's or TAA'S.
6. Recommend that Lindane, 1%, 2 oz. (NSN: 6840-00-242-4217 be issued to
medical personnel for treating infestations of body lice on military
