    MEMORANDUM TO: Commander, Task Force Evac, 332d Medical Brigade

    THRU: Commander, 14th Preventive Medicine Unit.

    1. DATE SURVEY: 5 February 1991.               ...

    2. TYPE OF SURVEY: General Field Sanitation Survey.

    3. UNIT: 148th Evac Hospital.

    4. DISCREPANCIES:


          LATRINES AND SANITATION
          a.  All types of wastes are being burned in one common pit.
          b.  No urinal tubes are present near male latrines.
          C.  Latrine cans are not being burned out correctly. Wastes are being
              dumped into a burn pit, where burning is not complete.
          d.  No pesticides are being used to control flies around latrines.
          e.  Handwashing facilities are too low. Soakage pits are too small and
              contain standing water.
          f.  Trash is not being stored in bags properly.

          MESS FACILITY
          a. Storage racks in dry storage unit are too close to ground.
          b. No grease trap or soakage pit in place.
          C. Refrigeration unit relay not working properly. Temperature is being
              maintained manually.
          d. Produce is being stored directly on refrigerator floor.

    S. RECOMMENDATIONS:


          -LATRINES AND SANITATION
          a.  Wastes should be segregated into hazardous and non-hazardous pits.
          b.  Construct 3 urinal tubes in the vicinity of each male latrine.
          C.  Latrine cans should be burned out individually to a fine ash by a
              burning a mixture of I part mogas to 3 part diesel.
          d.  Wed flybait or a pesticide with ample residual killing power in
              latrines.
          e.  Raise handwashing facilities and enlarge soakage pits. Place rocks
              in soakage pits to prevent standing water.
          f.  All bagged trash should be stored in a specified area. Bagged trash
              should be hauled to a burn pit on a more regular basis.

          MESS FACILITY
          a.  Raise storage racks in dry storage unit to comply with minimum
              specifications listed in TS Med 530.
          b.  Strain mess kit laundry waste into a soakage pit in accordance with
              FM 21-10 or FC-8-6.
          C.  Refrigerator relay should be repaired to eliminate need for manual
              temperature regulation. Unit was advised of refrigeration repair
              unit at Al Qusaymah.
          d.  Elevate produce on boards to provide adequate distance from floor.
