         addressed, the focus was switched to train up for war. As most
         NBC FMs and TMs are geared to warfighting in the European theater,
         a significant effort was undertaken to reorient all soldiers on
         the threat and NBC operations in a desert environment. The
         orientation received the full support of all of the commanders
         throughout the brigade.

              The Brigade NBC section visited each battery site, where they
         gave classes on Iraqi NBC capabilities, NBC site survivability,
         conventional and non-conventional decontamination procedures and
         also focused on the treatment of chemical casualties. It also ran
         an abbreviated version of the NBC certification course in order to
         familiarize officers and NCO'S, who were filling critical NBC
         slots with their responsibilities. These classes were instrumental
         in standardizing NBC operations across the brigade.

              Much time was spent by the brigade NBC section coordinating
         decontamination and detection requirements with ally and joint
         services. Detection shortfalls at the Dhahran Airbase were
         overcome by sharing assets with the Royal Airforce and the ist
         Tactical Fighter Wing. At King Khalid Military City the brigade
         shared detection and decontamination requirements with the
         Airforce Disaster Preparedeness Group.

              On 14th January the brigade chemical officer visited with
         Major Ordman, 803rd Medical Group, to discuss the ARCENT anthrax
         immunization program. Initially, he was unwilling to allocate
         vaccines to the brigade. He eventually agreed to dispatch 2 mobile
         teams to HHB llth ADA Bde and 2-52 ADA. The subsequent
         distribution of other NBC prophylaxis by ARCENT was as
         disorganized as is the initial anthrax distribution.

              d. Warfighting Phase- The ilth ADA Brigade entered Desert
         Storm fully trained and equipped to fight and survive in an NBC
         environment. The overall NBC preparedness of the coalition forces
         may have been the key factor in detering the use of chemical by
         the enemy forces.
