2.(U) Operation Desert Shield\Storm
3.(U) KEYWORDS: Chemical Downwind Message
4.(U) Title: Weather Data
5.(U) Observation: For Operation Desert Shield/Storm, the seven
battalions assigned/attached to the brigade were spread out over
approximately 900 Kms. Getting accurate Chemical Downwind Message
in all the different areas was a difficult task.
6.(U) Discussion: Each Air Defense Battalion was deployed to a
separate geographic location with its unique weather pattern,
there by making it necessary to provide a separate CDM to each
battalion. There were many instances when these units were set up
outside the effective radius of a weather service (Artillery of
Airforce) station. Even though the weather was passed to these
units by the out-of-range station, it was of very little use to
them, because it did not reflect the true weather in their
location. The ability to measure their own weather would enhance
the accuracy of the data.
7.(U) Lesson Learned: Because of the wide dispersal of the Ilth
ADA units, each battalion sized unit should have a means of
collecting its own weather data.
8.(U) Recommended Action: Recommend that each air defense
battalion be authorized to purchase a Belt Weather Kit. The
battalions would in turn train their own personnel to collect
weather data.
