                                       INTELLIGENCE OPERATIONS
                                          EXECUTIVE SUMMARY

The mission essential tasks of the BDE S-2 were to 1) sustain
tactical operations with intelligence support and 2) keep the
Commander informed of the Iraqi threat during operations Desert
Shield and Storm, from Aug 90 - Feb 91. The operations of the Bde
S-2 section evolved through the following three phases:

                          1. Deployment
                          2. Support of ADA Operations - Operation Desert Storm
                          3. Redeployment - Operation Desert Calm.

                 1. DEPLOYMENT

                      a. Prior to the S-2 elements deploying, the section
coordinated intelligence support and current information on the
invasion with XVIII Airborne Corps'G-2, ARCENT G-2, Army
intelligence Agency (AIA), and the Defense Intelligence Agency
(DIA). This coordination consisted of numerous telephone
conversations and hard copy messages received daily, with updates
every 12 hours at minimum. This coordination validated the
current enemy situation at the classified level and
negated/confirmed information received through open sources, i.e.
CNN. During this time the initial commander's priority
intelligence requirments (PIR's) were disseminated to the
subordinate units. The finalized PIR's were published in follow-
on OPORD's (Annex B). In addition, to the collection of
intelligence prior to deployment, enemy indicators monitored
provided vital information on the concerns for the ADA mission.

                      b. The S-2's compilation of the threat data i.e. order of
battles for the ground, air, and tactical ballistic missile
threats on Iraq, would later be displayed on the current enemy
situation board and situational map located in the Bde's Forward
Element. In addition, the information gathered was sorted and
compiled into a quick reference book, disseminated to subordinate
S-2's. The quick reference material consisted of air (fixed,
rotary, and airfield locations), tactical ballistic missiles
(TBM), and surface to air missiles (SAM's). An overlay depicting
TBM (fixed locations) and SAM sites was maintained in the S-3
                 Operations Cell at Fort Bliss.

                      C. Daily coordination was conducted with the installation G-
2 and other tenant unit S-2's i.e. 6th ADA Bde and 3rd ACR, on the
current situation. The exchange of intellligence was conducted
through meetings at the Emergency operation Center and telephone
                 conversations.

                      d. The initial deployment of S-2 personal consisted of 40%
of the section with the remaining personnel deploying the latter
part of August. The Asst. S-2 and an Intelligence Analyst
remained as part of the rear detachment element. This element
