1. (U) Julls number, I submitted by Ilth ADA BDE S2,
Cpt. Weiner, (915)568-1370.
2. (U) Operation Desert Shield 90, Aug 90.
3. (U) Keywords: BDE S2, Sustained operations.
4. (U) Title: Air Intelligence Preparation of the Battlefield
(IPB).
5. (U) Observation: The third dimension of the battlefield or Air
IPB, remains a less emphasized area among the Army and other
services.
6. (U) Discussion:
a. (U) Unlike ground IPB, the army continues to place less
emphasis on the third dimension or Air IPB.
b. (U) The Bde S2 developed an Air IPB matrix used as the
planning product for offensive and defensive operations within the
theater. The validation of the product was requested to XVIII ABN
Corps, ARCENT, and CENTAF.
0. (U) Response to requests for intelligence information
(Rills) were untimely. Numerous Rills required DIA's response
which normally took too long i.e. in some cases as many as 10
days. The untimeliness and at times inconsistent response with
the theater collection reports on the TBM threat for example,
complicated the analytical process and validation on the real
threat.
7. (U) Lesson Learned. A dedicated intelligence net that links
the subordinate units may assist in overcoming the untimely and
inconsistent intelligence. This net can be the focal point for
the battalions to exchange their information and reports with Bde.
In addition it may help shorten the physical distance.
8. (U) Recommended Actions:
a. (U) Emphasis be place on the third dimension of the
battlefield (Air IPB) by the Army.
b. (U) Air IPB for the llth ADA Bde should incorporate the
TBM and RPV threats.
