FOOD WAS GENERALLY EXCELLENT AND SCHEDULING SMOOTHED OUT
EVENTUALLY.
Billet reassignment became a top priority and necessitate the
development of a new DATA BASE questionnaire for all the reasons
mentioned in #1. Completion of Data Base went smoothly receiving
generally good information. Lack of time prevented Dept Heads to
complete missed data elements but we trekked on and made
assignments. Confusion over proper number of billets in each
functional area was resolved by making a decision on how it would
be and staffing to that number.
Watch bills changed constantly causing recurrent waves of
confusion. Watch duties were not well delineated. Complaints were
noted when JR. enlisted were required to clean CPO quarters when
everyone was to clean up after themselves. Additional displeasure
when the second set of barrack were atrocious and the cleaning
started again.
Much of the early work at FT Dix by the Command Staff would have
been facilitated by access to appropriate equipment from Day #1.
For example: copiers, typewriters, phones, computers which would
have expedited many little things.
The provision of uniform issue, purchase, CBR issue and legal
assistance was most appreciated.
4. ARRIVAL IN BAHRAIN
The flight to Bahrain, though long and tiring, was handled very
well. McGuire personnel were courteous and well organized.
Arriving at night to armed guards, being transported in local buses
with local drivers was a tense situation for many. This process
also went smoothly and rapidly.
The prescribed a.-rival schedule of Advanced Party and Main Body had
not worked twice in succession. This is most likely due to flight
arrangements clearly and forever out of our control. Therefore,
contingency plans should be drawn up for alternated housing away
form FH sit so as not to impede sit progress and provide equitable
arrangements for all. The research project titled "Cunard
Princess" vs "Stalag 17", a study in acclimatization technique,
proved that hostility and friction are byproducts of unequal
treatment. Perhaps rethink the entire time table for FH set up and
determine how to use personnel more efficiently and use time more
effectively. The supply department staff shouldprobably arrive as
early as possible to give them time to set up, find everything and
become familiar with the system before the supply chits start
arriving. The distribution of Atropine/2Pam, decon kits and
Anthrax vaccine were not timely enough.
