The berthing conditions were better than anticipated. Conc;ete
pads, walkways and blacktop roads preventedmuch of the dusty dirty
conditions we anticipated. iso Head functioned well, Pli 6 staff
needs additional education regarding their use and misuse to
prevent the flushing of inappropriate material, The shift work
relieved much of the over crowding but an additional ISO is
required.
T@.e berthing tent slabs proved to be a God send during our worst
rain storm. Had we been on sand all tents would have had indoor
running water, Tent position in reference to ground level and tie
down rope security took on a new meaning that night.
5. CONSTRUCTION AND STUFFING
As noted earlier, many problems have been identified on site:
a. Too much help too soon
b. friction between cruise ship contingent and concentration
camp contingent
c. difficulty finding supplies and receiving issue of needed
items.
Other areas of potential improvement:
a. better outside lighting form the beginning to prevent
injuries and allow work to continue after dark
b. plan to integrate newly arrive personnel into working
parties to spread work more equitably
c. grade hospital site so that central passageway in on the
crown and wing slop gradually away from center. This would prevent
water from running under the hospital during rain accumulation. in
any climate with significant rainfall we will need a perimeter
drain around the entire hospital.
cl. provide the crew chief a muster sheet so that he could
verify who was present and prevent wandering off.
e. allow assignment of newly arriving personnel to learn by
doing a buddy system to allow sharing of jobs
Noteworthy is the number of junior and senior medical officers who
participated with enthusiasm and determination in the physical
construction o! our hospital. Their effort was noted and
appreciated. Construction of wards was rapid and well organized
until ward 10. the completion of the last 5 wards slowed related
to locating proper materials but was completed satisfactorily.
Equipment was found in good condition upon uncrating.
