During the deployment phase, the Navy convincingly demonstrated its ability to
quickly move platforms staffed with medical personnel to a theater. Table 4 pro-
vides key dates in the activation of naval medical platforn2s in the theater of opera-
tions. Table 5 documents the buildup of Navy echelon M beds in theater.

FH-5, which was prepositioned afloat in Diego Garcia aboard MV Noble Star,
departed on 9 August in response to the 8 August mobilization order for FH-5 and
anchored in the Gulf on 11 August. Unloading did not begin until 21 August because
of a change of destination from Dhallran to Al Jubayl. Unloading was completed
24 August, the day the air detachment and advance party arrived from Norfolk. The
remainder of the personnel arrived I and 2 September. FH-5 was operational with
350 beds on 9 September and with 500 beds on 12 September.
