specialized simulation equipment and experienced instructors not available after
deployment. A secondary mission of SELRES units designated to backfir CONUS
MTFs is to provide personnel for rotation and replacement of deployed active-duty
personnel. These units should receive training to improve readiness for this opera-
tional mission.
OTBER MEDICAL PLATFORMS
The Navy provided medical personnel augmentation for three host-nation
facilities with a total of 350 beds. In addition, NAVCENT supported 150 host-nation
beds that were staffed by Army personnel. In early August, surgical team 1 from
Naval Hospital, San Diego, and surgical team 2 from Naval Hospital, Portsmouth,
deployed to staff host-nation facilities. In January, additional MMARTs were sent
to the host-nation support hospitals.
Each of the amphibious task groups contained LHAs and LPHs that were
assigned secondary missions as CRTSS. Table 10 lists these platforms.
USS Nassau, USS Iwo Jiyna, and USS Guam deployed in August with the 4th NMB
as part of Amphibious Group (PHMGRU) II. USS New Orleans, USS Tarawa, and
USS Tripoli deployed in December with the 5th MEB as part of PHIBGRU III. In
January, USS Tripoli was detached from the amphibious task force for other mis-
sions. USS Okinawa deployed with Amphibious Squadron 5.
During an amphibious assault, the CRTSs may provide echelon II medical care
to the landing force until shore-based medical facilities are established, Their
capability depends on the number and specialty mix of the medical augmentees
embarked. During a contingency, medical personnel from CONUS augment the
normal peacetime complement of medical and dental personnel aboard CRTSS. In
addition, naval medical personnel are assigned to give Marine Corps units an
organic medical capability. These medical personnel, however, disembark during
the amphibious assault to establish echelon II facilities ashore and to evacuate the
wounded to the CRTSS.
CRTS staffing doctrine calls for the ships to leave CONUS at M+l staffing.
Both PIUBGRU II and PHIBGRU III deployed without the full M+l complem@ixt of
medical augmentation personnel. Each PHIBGRU had less than its doctrinal
complement of amphibious shipping, which resulted in limited berthing space. In
November, PHIBGRU II sent home 57 medical personnel, citing berthing
constraints. At NAVCENTs request, augmentees required to bring statang levels to
M+l were placed on 72-hour alert in CONUS.
