(4) Defective Battenfeld Oil Stocks. Battenfeld
lubricating oils produced after 1985 and procured under
MIL-L-21O4. MIL-L-2105, MIL-L-46l52 and MIL-L-21260 do not
meet military specifications. It is extremely critical that
none of these products be used or shipped in support of
DESERT SHIELD. Units. experiencing difficulty with local
purchase can requisition stocks from DGSC (59G) with advice
code 2A in column 65 and 66 of the requisition (i.e. AOA
(CONUS) and AOl (OCONUS)).
(5) Usability of specific fuels and lubricants. DESERT
SHIELD has generated numerous questions/concerns relative to
general fuel and lubricant practices, safety and usability
in Saudia Arabia. Belvoir Research, Development and
Engineer Center (BREDEC) has developed a listing of the most
frequently asked questions and corresponding answers.
Attached at Appendix 1 to ANNEX G are "Questions and Answers
Regarding Fuels and Lubricants Utilization in Operation
Desert Shield". Appendix 1 should be widely disseminated to
all units prior to deployment.
(6) Fuels/lubricants recommended for ground equipment.
Questions have been asked regarding proper product,
specification, correct military symbol, and recommended use
of fuels, engine oils, gear oils, hydraulic fluids,
transmission1 fluids, brake fluid, greases, coolant, weapons
lubricants and fuel additives for ground equipment. To
provide specific guidance, a table of product recommendations
has been prepared.. Attached at Appendix 2 to ANNEX G is the
table entitled "Fuel and Lubricant Recommendations for Ground
Materiel in Operation Desert Shield".
(7) Assure proper fuels, lubricants and associated
products are contained in vehicles and equipment prior to
deployment. Because of the more severe operational
environment, additional operational procedures and practices
have been identified and implemented. Recommended
operations and maintenance actions, the "Do's and Don't's" have
been prepared. Attached at appendix 3 to ANNEX G are "Ground
Vehicle Operations and Maintenance Recommendations Regarding
POt for Operation Desert Shield".
(8) Specific Fuel Advisories. A series of fuel
advisory memoranda and messages have been developed, to
respond to specific questions and concerns. One of the more
critical issues concerns elimination and prevention of
microbiologic growth in fuel tanks. Attached fuel
advisories dealing with this subject at Appendix 4, should
be widely disseminated to appropriate units prior to
deployment.
