6. nO diesel engines have to have oil drains more frequently when con-
suming JET A-1 fuels?

Answer: No. One of the benefits in using JET A-i (or JP-5) as a diesel
fuel alternate is that oil drain intervals can be extended.
This is because of the lower sulfur content of JET A-i versus
diesel fuel and the more complete combustion that will result when
diesel engines operate with JET A-i. The net result is that
the engine oil additives are not depleted as quickly and the
soot content of the used oil does not increase as rapidly due
to the lower combustion blow-by produced.

7. Will diesel engines have to have oil drains more frequently when con-
suming the diesel fuel provided from in-country/near-by refineries?

Answer: Yes. The diesel fuels refined in Saudi Arabia and near-by
refineries generally have higher sulfur contents than those
refined in either Europe (NATO) or CONUS (i.e., O.7-~.O wtZ
versus 0.1-0.3 wtZ). When consuming these higher sulfur
fuels, the additives become depleted more rapidly requiring
that oil drain intervals be significantly shortened. If these
oil drain intervals are not shortened, continued operation on
engine oils having lost their additive effectiveness will
result in serious wear or possible failure of oil-wetted
engine parts. Users should reduce their normal drain
              interval/periods by roughly 50 percent.

8. Does OE/HDO-30 tactical engine oil (MIL-L-2104) breakdown in engines
when operating in the Saudi Arabian environment?

Answer: No. Although OE/~O-3O may not be the best grade to select for
across the fleet use, it will not breakdown. The ma3or short-
coming is that some engines will encounter slightly higher wear
rates because OE/~1DO-3O is not as viscous (thick) as
OE/HDO-~S/4O or OE/HDO-40 which are the primary recommended
grades for use in the Saudi environment.

9. Can OE/~IDO-4O tactical engine oil (~It-L-2tO4) be used year-round in
Saudi Arabia?

Answer: Y~s. OE/~1DO-4O oils can satisfactorily be used in areas
where the anticipated minimum temperatures does not fall below
250F (-40C). Worldwide weather service airfield summaries
reveal that the average minimum temperatures in Saudi Arabia
do not fall below 600F (15.60C) during the winter months. tf
there is any question, use of OE/W)O-iS/40 oils is recommended
as these oils are satisfactory down to 00F (-t80C).
