MOBILITY/COUNTERMOBIThITY - 7
TOPIC: Range Estimation
DISCUSSION:
Deceptive terrain, lack of terrain features, and heat make
accurate range estimation difficult for even the most experienced
personnel.
LESSON(S) LEARNED:
Errors in range estimation can be reduced by the use of reference
points, navigation aids such as PLRS, and thorough reconnais-
sance. Experience will reduce, but not eliminate errors in range
estimation. Errors in range estimation will be particularly
appearent in the use of supporting arms, reinforcing the need for
target reference points.
