C. (U) in addition to proper sanitation practices, residual
pesticide applications to latrines, garbage collection sites, and
messing areas are necessary to control filth flies. Tentage will
also be treated with residual pesticides prior to occupancy to
eliminate fly and mosquito resting sites.
d@ (U) Individual personal protective measures against
vectors are extremely effective and their use must be enforced.
Proper wear of the desert battle dress uniform (BDUs), including
bloused trousers and rolled down shirt sleeves, will prevent ,nany
bites or stings by insects or scorpions. Deet extended duration
insect repellant cream must be applied to exposed skin surfaces
and extended a few inches under clothing to provide protection
against sandflies and mosquitoes. Total protection includes the
application of perm6thrin spray to the battle dress uniforms
(BDU) and bed netting.
12. (U) ANIMALS
a. (U) Wild animals must be excluded from all troop areas.
Pets or 'mascots' will not be permitted. Rabies is endemic
throughout the AO and any animal bite must be considered as a
possible rabies threat and treated accordingly.
b. (U) Animal carcasses should be avoided. If carcasses are
present in the vicinity of bivouac areas, they will be burned or
treated with insecticides and buried.
13. (U) VENOMOUS ANIMALS
a. (U) Numerous species of scorpions are present in the AO
but the threat of serious injury from scorpion stings is low.
Several species of venomous snakes are also present in the AO but
the bite of the most commonly encountered species, the desert
horned viper, is not life-threatening.
b. (U) Unit commanders must instruct all their personnel that
contact with venomous animals must be avoided and troops will not
play with, provoke, or capture them. Boots and bed rolls must be
checked for snakes or scorpions each day prior to use.
14. (U) COMMUNICABLE DISEASE SURVEILLAHTCE
a. (U) An active disease surveillance system will be
conducted to accurately assess current medical threats and force-
degrading disease trends. Disease surveillance data gathering and
reporting is a CENTCOM and MARCENT requirement.
b. (U) The surveillance data forms will be completed on a
weekly basis and forwarded to the IMEF Surgeon via respective
