9. (U) HUMAN WASTE DISPOSAL
a. (U) Burn-barrel latrines will be utilized due to the
impermeability of the soil within the AOR and subsequently burned
on a daily basis.
b. (U) One four-hole latrine will be provided for every 50
men. The latrines must also be located 100 feet down-wind of
berthing areas and 300 feet down-wind of any food service or
messing area.
C. (U) Single burn-barrels with drainage holes in the bottom
will be used for urinals. The barrel will be placed in the soil
approximately 6 - 8 inches.
(U) The interior of the latrines require daily cleaning
with a disinfectant solution.
10. (U) GARBAOE/REFUSE DISPOSAL
a. (U) All garbage and refuse will be adequately disposed of
on a daily basis in-order- to preclude the development of
unsanitary conditions. Improperly disposed of waste contributes
to fly-breeding and rodent harborage.
b. (U) Where contractor support is not available, all garbage
and refuse will be disposed of in a landfill. Trenches for a
landfill will be dug perpendicular to the prevailing winds. A
daily burn and bury policy must be established.
C. (U) The location of any landfill should be made with close
consultation with preventive medicine personnel.
11. (U) VECTOR CONTROL
a. (U) Potential threats from vector-borne disease include
mechanical transmission of gastrointestinal diseases by filth
, transmission of cutaneous leishmaniasis and sandfly fever
from phlebotomus sandflies and mosquito borne diseases including
malaria, dengue, and numerous arboviruses. Additionally, other
potential threats include lice and tick-borne diseases such as
typhus or Congo Crimean Hemorrhagic fever.
b. (U) Vector and pest control operations will be conducted
as necessary by the Preventive Medicine Technician (PMT) assigned
to individual units. Additional vector control will be provided
by lst MEDBN or 2nd MEDBN Preventive Medicine sections upon
request, for those units without PMTs or those areas beyond the
