                                  NARRATIVE SUMMARY


                          COMMAND, OF,ERATIONS and TRAINING

           During October 1990 the First Reconnaissance Battalion continued to
      support Ist MarDiv for Operation DESERT SHIELD. Line Companies continued
      their deployment rotations to the Battalion Forward Command Post (CP) at
      Manifa, Saudi Arabia, to conduct reconnaissance patrols and training while
      worp:j.ng with the Headquarters and Service Company at improving defensive
      positions. Continuous reconnaissance Support was provided to Tas@.,. Force
      Ripper +or surveillance and reconnaissance of the MARCENT western boundary.
      The Battalion established a liaison recon/sLirveillance office at the First
      Marine Division (Forward) Combat Operations Center (COC) to provide
      immediate information and Support to the Division G-2 and G-3 staff.
      Supporting arms employment continued with specific training in controlling
      Simulated Close Air Support (SIMCAS) and Simulated Close In Fire Support
      (SIMCIFS) conducted by the Battalion Air Officer and laser designator
      operations training conducted by a Division Mobile Training Team (MTT).
      The Battalion COC has exercised procedures during a Battalion Jump Command
      Posit Exercise (CPX) and a Division CPX. Battalion Sel+ Contained Breathing
      Apparatus (SCUBA) dive operations were conducted during October to maintain
      the Battalions SCUBA divers proficiency and mission readiness.

                             PERSONNEL AND ADMINISTRATION


            The S-I/Adjutant and Personnel Section continued to provide
       dministrative support to assigned and attached personnel fa the Battalion
       n Saudi. Arabia.
