1. (U) GENERAL
a. (U) Purpose. To provide guidance and assign responsibilities for
the conduct of graves registration. References (a) through (b) provide
guidance relating to Graves Registration (GRREG) matters.
b. (U) Scope. The GRREG Program provides for the search, recovery,
evacuation, identification, care and disposition of remains.
C. (U) Policy.
(1) (U) GRREG is a command responsibility which includes the
disposition of remains and personal effects found with remains.
(2) (U) All personnel will comply with the basic policies
contained in reference (b) as modified by reference (c) All GRREG
activities will be conducted as quickly as possible.
(3) (U) Remains will be handled in a solemn and reverent manner
at all times. Every effort will be made to establish positive
identification at the earliest time. All identifying data will be recorded
prior to evacuation or burial.
(4) (U) Local national personnel under the supervision of US
military nay be used to assist with certain portions of the GRREG program.
They will not be used to perform identification nor will they be directly
responsible for the security/accountability of personal effects found with
remains.
(5) (U) Every effort will be made by unit commanders to recover
and evacuate remains of deceased personnel immediately after combat. Units
which can not recover remains must report as accurately as possible the
location of the remains, the names of the missing and any amplifying
information such as vehicle numbers which can help with the recovery and
identification by other units. Speed is of paramount importance to the
