NARRATIVE SUMMARY
Marine Aviation Logistics Squadron 16 was placed under the
Operational Control of MAG-16 on 3 September- 1990 fot- Operation
Desert Shield. The Squadron quickly adjusted to the demanding c@
f-sar-sh environment of the Saudi Arabian desert, and began
expert Ienci ng the environmental impacts of the hot and sandy
atmosphere. MALS Staff personnel participated in a FARP site
r@e@,iew, and provided a detachment to support the FARP at Manifal-)
Bay. As the number of supported aircraft @rrlving lri-country began
to grow, Ras Al Char was established as a dispersal sight for thL-.
heavy Ilft squadrons. MALS Marines provided crucial help to MWSS-
374 L-.r,ecting "terit city" for the entir,e base camp at Jubail NAF
under blazing temperatures that often exceeded 120 degrees.
Or@ 8 September Marines from MALS-16 assisted Marines from
MWSS-374 and HMLA-269 recover an AH--LW "Cobra" that crashed in -the
desert.
78 Mobile Facilities from the East,coast TAVB-3, S.S. Wright,
were used to stand-up a functioning IMA at an unimproved desert.

During September, servicemembers participating in Operai-io@i
Desert Shield were granted Imminent Danger Pay (IDP) and were also
authorized to mall. letters and tapes to the United States free of
charge.
On 25 September LCpl H. K. Robinson of MALS-16, was
meritoriously promoted to the rank of Cor,poral by the Commandant
of the Marine Corps, General A. Ot-ay while visiting Jubai'l NAF,
r loaded with
a complete Inter-mediate Maintenance Activity (IMA) complex, and
Supply Contingency Support Packages (CSP's) , The ships at,-rival
enabled MALS-16 to Provide full IMA echelon repair and supply
support.
During the period of 3 September thru 30 September, MALS-16
awarded 4 Navy Achievement Medals, 9 Met-i+orioijs Masts and One
Lettet- of Appreciatior@.
Ongoirig personnel training continued to be the major focus of
operations fot- the Marines of MALS-,16, vilth training in the areas
of NBC defense, Soviet/Ir-aq-i strategy, first aid, and desert
tactics. The Squadron Sergeant Major established a reactionary
platoon and regularly briefed the sentries of potential terrorist
threat.
The arrival of the S.S. Curtiss and it's operational IMA facility
oiiboard in late September is anticipated to fut-thei- enhance the
logistical support provided to the fleet of MAG-16 based aircraft
by Marine Aviation Logistics Squadron 16.
