were filled as the Ct stay4 ow alert to the
Ist half of the month. At 0300, on 17 January the coalition forces
executed a massive air assault against IRAQI targets to include
Bagdad, the Iraqi capital. On 20 January 1991 at 2140 the first of
many air alarms sounded on camp 5 indicating that SCUD missiles had
been launched into Saudi Arabia and into our sector. Camp 5 reacted
effectively and efficiently during all alerts.
The Group S-3 NBC Chief continued conducting a series of NBC
Defense Courses. The primary objective was to ensure that all Marines
within the SRI Group had all of the required NBC gear and training to
conduct offensive operations. On 5 January 1991, the Medical
Department began issuing CANA autoinjectors and Pyridostigmine tablets
and conducted a briefing on their use against NBC agents. On 12
January all SRI units began receiving ANTHRAX injections for defense
against this biological agent. On 16 January 1991, SRI Marines began
taking CIPRO tablets to enhance NBC protective measures.
A weekly Air conference at MAG-16 continued to be hold every
Wednesday until the 16th of January when the Group Air Officer was
recalled to MAG-16. Requested air support for the following Sunday
through Saturday were submitted and worked out at each conference.
Capt R. A. Palena, S-3A and Capt B. K. Kragel, Air Officer, attended
the weekly conference as representatives of lst SRI Group. Up until
his departure, Capt Kragel greatly enhanced our capability to conduct
air operations.
During this period, organizational improvement, training and
operations of the Camp 5 Area Guard continued. lstlt Watts, 2nd SRI
Group, became the new Guard officer replacing Capt Hall. The area
guard increased in size to 82 Marine Corps Personnel, divided into
four sections. Guard personnel are rotated on a 30 day basis from
units within the camp.
Due to the displacement of the Commanding Officer and principal
staff members, Major G. D. "Dusty" Rhoads, was assigned as the Camp
Gray Commander with Major Mike O'Neil acting as his executive officer.
Capt R. A. Palena continues to serve in the S-3 Section as the S-3B
