              January once again brought changes to the Ist SRI Group deployed
          to the Kingdom of Saudi Arabia in support of Operation Desert Storm.
              2nd SRI Group Augmentee forces continued to flow during this month
          and all personnel completed their movement to SWA by 14 Jan. The
          increase in personnel assets brought many intelligent Marines from our
          East Coast sister unit which has enhanced our capabilities greatly.
          This increase also helped to close out our January PERSTAT figures at
          3222, an increase of 886 personnel over last month. During this
          month, notification was also made to all U. S. Armed Forces Personnel
          that Executive Order 12744 had been signed by the President
          designating the Arabian Peninsula areas as a Combat Zone for Tax
          purposes effective 17 January 1991. This order excludes from Federal
          Income Tax all compensation for military service of enlisted members
          and warrant officers, during any month in which they perform service
          in the combat zone. Commissioned officers may exclude $500.00 per
          month. This order provided a temporary pay increase for all personnel
          due to the hardships that they and their loved ones are enduring while
          participating in combat operations.

               Saddam Hussein's deadline came and went on 15 Jan 91, and the
          aerial bombardment commenced early on the morning of 17 January. Our
          units continued to support the MEF with distinction throughout the
          AOR. The end of January saw the battle of KHAFJI take place involving
          an Iraqi mechanized force. The result of the battle will produce some
          of the first battle commendations for heroic achievements that this
          young command has seen to date.

            The Group's Intelligence related matters are assigned to the
          operations officer, as an additional duty.
