                          Command, Operations, and Training

During this period, Ist Marines Headquarters continued to

Battalion, First Marines; Third Battalion, Ninth Marines; First
Tank Battalion (-); First Combat Engineer Battalion (-), and
one company of Light Armored Infantry. The focus of effort for
the task force during the month of February was the preparation
for and the conduct of the liberation of Kuwait.

On I and 2 February, Task Force Papa Bear conducted a ]@90

area was established, preparations for the ground offensive
were given priority. Staff planning to support the Division's
concept of operations was constant. Every possible contingency
was considered and each detail studied. Orders groups,
sar)dtables, planning conferences, and liaison visits with
Division and subordinate commands were continuous. These
efforts dealt mainly with distribution of engineer assets, EPW
handling, medevac procedures, NBCD, fire support coordination
           and combat service support.

On 15 February, a task force breach exercise was conducted
including all subordinate commands. On 16 February, a task
force leader's recon to observe the task force's axis of
advance into Kuwait was completed. Also on 16 February, a
HEMMS (Hand Emplaced Mine Marking System) demonstration was
 by First Combat Engineer
Battalion. On 20 February, the task force displaced to its
           final AA (vic OS 669469).

teams to reconnoiter the route to the berm located near the
Saudi/KLIWait (SA/KU) border. STA teams continued to
reconnoiter movement routes, battle positions, and mark the
lanes and breach locations at the first Iraqi obstacle belt.

At 1300, 1/13.'s Jump COC and battery advvance parties
crossed the SAIKU border to establish firing positions
(vic OS 7466) :in order to support the attack of Task Force Papa
