At@ 0001, 24 February, TF Ripper was ordered to move into
its attack position, which was approximately 14km inside
KL4wait . At 0200, TF Papa Bear began moving to :its attack
position . 3/9 led the Task Force movement, followed by I::-t
Tank Bn and 1/1 along axis OUTLAW. At 0533, I'F l@apa Pear
crossed PL Black into Kuwait. By 0745, the entire Task Force
was in its attack position.
3/9 crossed the I,OD at 0'748 and moved to its assault
position (vic OS 730730) where it linked up with its STA
team cltiides. "Wolf" and "Badger" returned from their
reconnaissance of t[ie first obstacle belt (vic OS 765'765) and
reported no enemy sig@it,eJ. The approach to the first obstacle
belt went as planned. TF Ripper was through its breach and
well into its zone. 3/9 commenced its br(-ac@i of tyie first
obstacle bel-t at 0905. Obstacles encountered were a front
bar'bed wire f(@rice, -L2(,)m deep AP/AT mirie-tield and a barbed
wire fence. The Obstacl.e Clearing Detac@iments (OCI)'s) launched
.llrie across t@ie obstacle belt. '.CFie line cYiar@leE-, were
marginally effective, three of six charges used had to be
manually capped Cor dk@t@onat.ic)ri. The lanes were t@ieri marked
with expedient marking material and proofed by traclcwidth mine
rough the first
obstacle belt.
3/9 began moving throu(lyi the breach, prepared to assault
and clear Iraqi defenses north of the obbstacle belt. No enemy
forces were, encountered. By 1040, 3/9 had established a 2000m
by 3000m breachhead and cleared the way for foll-ow-on forces.
Following close, behind 3/9, Ist Tank Bn passed thi-c)ug@i the
breach lanes and began to clear its zone to the northeast.
After passing t.hi,c)@Agh the breach, @L/I attacked southeast along
the minefi,21d to clear troop positions and vei,iicle i,evetmer)ts.
-1/1 then moved to tyie northwest coirier of the workers canip,
previously cleared by TF Taro, and waited for the next breach.
Ist Tank Bn expanded its zone to the north and received
sporadic shell fire. Cobras and Harriers controlled by lst
Tank Bn destroyed two tartk@, two OI)s, one mortar
position, and numerous L)(-inlcer-,. 1/11 provided Supporting fire@j
on targets of opportunity and displaced forward once t@iE@
breachiiead was secured.
