During the expansion of the TF breachhead, the breach
support teams cleared and proofed two additional lanes.
Engineers marked the lanes and then began reloading the MK-154-
configured AAV's in preparation for breaching the second
obstacle belt.
At 1100, 3/9 again sent "Wolf", "Badger" and STA elements
to reconnoiter the second belt. "Wolf" and "Badger" came
under enemy indirect fire and requested air and artillery to
suppress the enemy. Four AV-BB's and one OV-10 FAC(A) were
utilized to destroy one FO tower, two mortar bunkers, two
T-55 tanks, and one infantry blinker from which direct fire
emanated.
The Task Force "A" Command Group passed through the first
breach following the trail elements of Ist Tank Battalion and
moved forward to establish a hasty CP (vic QS 792784). The "B"
Command Group remained on the friendly side of the breach to
coordinate movement through the breach lanes. When the last
vehicles of 1/1 had moved through the breach, the "B" Command
Group turned control of the lanes over to the TF S-4 and by
1205 had rejoined the "A' Command Group.
The TF Log Trains were initially established on the south
side of the breach, awaiting notification that enemy resistance
had been sufficiently suppressed to allow passage north. The
RAS was established on the south side to handle any casualties
incurred during the breach. At 1200, the completed flow of
combat units through the breach allowed for the displacement of
the Log Trains. By 1400, the Log Trains were deployed on the
north side of the breach and control of the lanes was turned
over to Ist Marine Division MP's.
IP to its attack position to
assault the second obstacle belt. They were receiving sporadic
shell fire in their zone. By 1500, 1/11 had displaced forward
and the Task Force 81mm mortars were positioned. The planned
neutralization fires on the defensive positions were executed.
Division's intent was for the Task Force to quickly clear
the second belt and establish a breachhead in order to land TF
X--Ray (1/3) inside the Task Force zone prior to darkness. By
1520, 3/9 had passed through Ist Tank Bn's zone and began its
breach of the second obstacle belt (vic QS 890860). OCD's
launched their line charges across the minefield to establish
two lanes, however three of eight line charges did not
detonate, thus requiring manual capping. By 1600, the left
lane was open but the right lane was blocked due to an M-60
roller tank that had been disabled by an AT mine. 3/9
commenced work on yet another alternate lane. By 1615, the
assault elements of 3/9 had passed through the breach lane and
had cleared an initial breachhead. A division of Cobras
reported in to the Task Force and were initially used by 3/9.
3/9 passed through the breach and immediately engaged five
