After clearing the n,.inefi.eld in its effort to rejoin the "A"
Command, the "B" C-7 AAV was fired upon by an enemy T-55. The
enemy tank was immediately engaged and destroyed by TOW's from
Ist Tank Bn. By 1800, the Task Force Command Group had
reunited without flli-ther incident.
Task Force Log Trains monitored the progress of the battle
and moved in trace of the assault elements. Due to the
continuing enemy resistance in the beachhead, the decision was
made to leave the Log Trains south of the second obstacle belt
for the evening.
At 1800, Task Force X-Ray aborted its heliborne landing
into BP X-Ray. The helicopters departed to the south and the
Task Force was informed the landing would be reattempted on the
morning of 25 February. During the early evening, the Task
Force consolidated its position, occupying the ground south of
the 93 grid line and east to BP X-Ray.
At 2200, the Task Force S-4 brought i-efueler-, forward
through the minefield breach lanes and refueled the Task Force
in preparation for the next day of fighting. Thick fog made
the four hour retl)rn journey of the refuelers to the south side
of the belt extremely difficult and hazardous.
The Task Force received its new mission via Division frag
order at 2330. The mission required the Task Force to block to
the east and northeast while the Division consolidated in zone.
Division intended an early morning landing of TF X-Ray (1/3)
in order to anchor the Division's right flank. Following the
landing of X-Ray, Task Force Papa Bear had an on order mission
to continue the att.ack to the northwest.
E II: BATTLE AT AL BURGAN
Stand to took place at 0530 on 25 February. Visibility
was extremely restricted due to dense fog. Division delayed TF
X-Ray's helicopter landing until the fog cleared. A Task Force
orders group was called for 0630 to discuss the Division Frag
and Task Force plans for the day.
At 0800, a T-SS tank and two Type-63 APC's appeared out of
the fog and stopped approximately 50 meters from tyie Task Force
C.P. A group of Iraqi soldiers accompanied the vehicles and
surrendered to the Task Force Security Platoon. Among those 5 U.S.C. 552
surrendering wa
disclosed under immediate tactical(b)(1)
interrogation that elements following his surrender party
intended to fight. Moments later, the Task Force CP came under
tank main gun and automatic weapons fire. Headquarters Marines
moved forward to engage the enemy with MK-19's, .50 cal, AT-4's-.
and LAAW'S. After a ten minute engagement during which several
of the enemy vehicles were either disabled or destroyed the
attacking force withdrew into the fog.
