T-55 tanks retreating to the northwest, killing two of them.
Continuing its assault against Iraqi defenses, 3/9 sustained
teri casualties from enemy mortar fire. Al.1 casualties were
evacuated by AAV to the 3/9 BAS. 3/9 continued its assault,
clearing trenches defended by the 22nd Bri-gade, St.h Mechanized
Division, arid destroying a 73mm recoilless rifie, an AT-3 with
ammo, and three 82mm mortars tubes with amma.

Cobras, tank main guns, artillery from 1/11, TOW's and
81mm mortars continued to fire on enemy positions between the
second obstacle belt and the Al t@urqan oilfield.

Despite only one lane being cleared, Ist Tank Bn passed
through the breach at 1615 and began engaging reveted tanks and
infantry in bunkers. TOW Co moved to the right flank and
engaged troops in bunkers and trenches with MK-19's and small
arms. As TOW's came into position, they engaged and destroyed
six T-55/62's. I Co, 3/9 (attached to lst Tank Bn) moved into
its battle position and :immediately became encumbered with
EPW's who surrendered by the hundreds, lst Tank Sn
repositioned its units to shape its defense by moving TOW's
forward and extending their frontage to form a screen line. In
doing so, TOW's encountered a T-55 which was iimmediately
destroyed. The Cobras, which had been working with Ist Tank
P,n, engaged and destroyed eight T-55 tanks with TOW'S. In
addition, Ist Tank Bn captured 650 EPW'S.

At I'/00, 1/1 followed lst Tank Bn through the breach, and
moved north to expand the breachhead. Both B Co 1/1 and TOW's
reported incoming artillery and small arms fire. TOW's
ee APC's during heavy fighting. B
Co 1/1 called in AH-lW's, which enga( 'led and destroyed four
armored vehi-cies. A Co I./I moved east and engaged enemy
vehicles and dismounted infantry. D Co 1/1 was tasked to
assist let Tank bn in EPW handling. One platoon remained with
Ist Tank Bn and escorted hundreds of FPW's back to the 'I'asL
Force )-PW collection point on the north side of the obstacle
           belt.

Shortly aħt.er the majority of the assault elements had
moved through the one good lane, 3/9 had completed an alternate
lane,. Engineers then moved forward and attempted to clear two
additional lanes. One of these lanes turned sour when a mine
plow rake attached to an M60AI with M9 blade was damaged beyond
repair. Because of these difficulties, only three of the four
           planned lanes were ever completed.

The Task Force "Al' Command Group fol-lowed I-st Tank Bn
through the breach and established the Task Force command post
(vic Q.13 8'73898). The "B" Command Group remained on the south
side of the breach coordinating movement into the breachhead.
At approximately 1730, the "B" Command Group turned lane
control- over to the 'rF S-4 arid proceed through the breach to
the north and side linked up with the "A" Command Gr-rjup.

                                                                 ENCLOSU-RE
                                           2-4
