ambush at gathering center 13, and destroyed 2 BMPS. lst section
then linked up with Idaho vehicle and set in for the night near
hill 114. 2nd section and 3rd section set in approximately 2 km
east of Ist section.
26 Feb 91
On 26 Feb. 91, the battalion moved out of the Al-Burqan Oil
Field and headed toward Kuwait International Airport. Near PL RED
we received word that enemy tanks were at grid 710205. We moved
ahead of the battalion and set up a screen oriented north and
northwest. After receiving no enemy contact we were once again
given an order to push further north to PL DIANE. The order of
movement was Ist, 3rd, 2nd sections. After passing through
uncommon, rough terrain, Ist section arrived at PL DIANE, they
were encircled by numerous Iraqi troops in trench lines and dug in
T-55s and T-62 tanks. 3rd section arrived and was placed in on
the left flank of Ist section. 2nd section went too far to the
left of 3rd section while trying to envelop the enemy on the left
flank. 2nd section dismounted with M-249's and M-16's. They
proceeded to clear enemy positions of the trench lines. At this
time the enemy started surrendering to lst and 3rd sections, and
no TOW missiles were fired. We set in at PL DIANE to await the
battalion while taking in EPW'S. While in PL DIANE, we were given
the mission to move into the Southern sector at Kuwait
International Airport. We departed at dusk and crossed PL
MARGARET at complete no visibility. Cpl Sanchez was ordered to
switch to BN. TAC I and guide the battalion through the numerous
obstacles which consisted of berms, wire, electric fences and dug
in tanks and ZSU 23-4's. Cpl Sanchez successfully led the
ight
(thermal) because NVG's were of no use. At approximately 2200,
3rd section observed a BTR moving at a rapid rate. while 3rd
section was observing the BTR Ist section continued to move north
to screen the northern sector. The BTR then stopped and proceeded
to dismount enemy infantry. A second BTR appeared and both BTR's
started engaging friendly forces. All sections were receiving
numerous rounds, to include SAGGERS and RPG'S. The fires were
coming from all directions which appeared to be an ambush. 2nd
section engaged the BTR with two missiles and destroyed one BTR.
At that time we received numerous rounds from the agricultural
center and later the next day found three BMP's and numerous
trenches and bunker positions. Ist section's section leader's
vehicle was hit by a heavy weapon round, and the gunner, LCpl
Ramirez, received numerous frags as well as HM2 Carr. After the
fire fight we settled in for the night.
