                                  NARRATIVE SUMMARY

                          COMMAND, OPERATIONS, AND TRAINING

The First Tank Battalion's mission is to close with and
destroy the enemy utilizing armor protected fire power, shock
effect, and maneuver, and to provide anti-armor and anti-
mechanized fire in support of the Marine Division.
I March found the battalion set into defensive positions to
the south of Kuwait International Airport. The battalion
remained in these positions until the 5th, when the road march
to Al Mishab began. As Ist Tanks drove down the streets of
Kuwait, Kuwaiti people lined the streets, waving Kuwaiti and
American flags, and cheering. It was a fitting end to a
       victorious campaign.
After the loo mile road march, the battalion began to turn in
ammunition at Al Mishab, and to ferry the tanks down to the port
of Jubail for the trip hone. The ammunition turn-in lasted
through the night, and was completed the morning of the 6th.
The battalion then displaced by companies down to Manifa Bay,
where maintenance, paperwork, and physical training were
the order of the day. All of the companies were in place
at Manifa Bay by the 14th.
The remainder of the month was devoted to preparing the
battalion for the return to COMUS, and waiting for transportation
       home.
